Class Policies: Most answers to any questions regarding our class can be found right here.
Class Rules and Policies
Welcome to a new school year! It is imperative that all students be given the opportunity to learn.
Therefore, the following class rules will be in place for the success of all our students:
1. Follow directions the first time they are given.
2. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
3. No Put Downs of any kind: this include cyber put-downs.
4. Be ready to learn everyday - in other words: Be on time and have
all needed materials.
To encourage students to follow our class rules, I will support appropriate behavior with praise, positive notes, classroom privileges, phone calls home, and PBIS. In addition, the class will develop Working Agreements for use in various situations such as small group work, whole group, and working with partners.
Serious Offenses as noted in the Barton Parent Handbook will warrant an immediate office referral. Please be assured that my goal is to work with parents to allow all of the students in my class to maximize their potential. We are all on the same team.
Grading Policy
Students are assigned class and homework meant to provide an ongoing evaluation of their skills. Students will also be
given periodic quizzes and tests to determine their mastery of academic skills and to determine extra instruction needed.
Grading is done on a percentage basis as follows:
98 - 100 = A+
93 - 97 = A
90-92 = A-
86-89 = B+
83-85 = B
80-82 = B-
76-79 = C+
73-75 = C
70-72 = C-
66-69 = D+
63-65 = D
60-62 = D-
59 and below = F
(Students will not receive below a 50% if there has been effort made on an assignment. Only missing work will count as a zero)
Most assigned work is for practice and review(formative assessment) only. Not all assignments will be entered into my gradebook. Please contact me - if you have any questions or concerns. Parents may access my gradebook online at: Parent Connect. You may link to Parent Connect through our school website. Each parent has been provided a login and password. I strongly encourage you to check your child's grades on a weekly basis. Please contact me; I can be emailed directly through Parent Connect if you have any questions or concerns. Please know that homework is kept to a minimum so that students can access extra help when needed through our classes Khan Academy, Benchmark, and Pearson Savvas, as well as other resource pages accessible through our classroom Symbaloo on the
Homework Policy
It is important that we practice the skills we have been taught in order to facilitate the long-term retention of those skills.
Homework consists of 30 - 60 minutes of nightly reading, math practice on-line, Spelling Practice online, and
project work.
Please note that your child will have homework Monday thru Thursday and occasionally on Friday for project work.
Missing Homework will result in the following effort grades on your child's report card:
0-3 Missing Assignments ....... O
4 - Missing Assignments ....... S+
5 - Missing Assignments ........S
6-7 Missing Assignments ........S-
8 + Missing Assignments ........N
All students with missing homework will be given the opportunity to make up the work at recess. A "missing notation" will only be entered should a student not use this opportunity.
If there is a valid reason why your child did not complete his/her homework, ie. illness, family emergency, please send a
note to school with your child. Team practices, etc... are not excused but I will work around your schedule
if there is a conflict I am made aware of. Also, should there be a problem with the amount of time that your child is
spending on homework, please let me know. In fourth grade, 30 - 50 minutes each night of steady work on homework is
appropriate. This is in addition to any long-term projects such as NHD;30-Book Challenge;Science Fair; etc.
Class time is also allotted to assist students in the planning, technology skills and time-management needed when completing projects. Long-term projects may include:
California Reports - August: National History Day - August, September, January, May; Optional Science Fair projects - October/November/December,
Electrical Rooms - Mid-February through March, Mission Reports: April, Gold Rush Hyperdoc - April/May.
Questions not answered on the FAQ page below can be addressed by texting me through ClassDojo; emailing me directly through this website at: [email protected]; or by calling at (951) 736-4545. Phone calls are returned Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00 am to 7:30 am. I will send parents a Zoom invitation for returned phone calls. All return calls will be recorded. I have 34 students and a lot to think about so want to make sure I can refer back to any adjustments that are made during a phone call meant to enhance a child's progress in class.
All Parent conferences need to be arranged ahead of time - I am available both before and after-school for conferences either in-person or via Zoom.
Emails/Dojo are returned daily between the hours of 6:30am and 3:00pm - Monday through Friday.
I'm looking forward to a great school year!

This page will answer questions commonly asked by students and parents.
Where can I find information on what is going on in my child's classroom?
The best way to find out what your child is doing in class is through this our Class Dojo ClassStory page. Our weekly Slide Deck is on that page.
How can I find out how my child is doing academically?
You can access your child's grades through ParentConnect. ParentConnect can be found on the Clara Barton Elementary Home page and on our class Symbaloo. Our class Symbaloo can be found on our Student and Parent Resource page in the main navigation bar of this website and has resources to assist your child in and out of class.
What are the class discipline procedures?
This year, I am using Class Dojo as a communication tool. Our school will also be using PBIS points. Students can turn in their points once a month for items or priviledges. These might include: lunch with a friend in the classroom, extra computer time, a homework pass, sitting next to a friend, etc...
I work proactively with students should they not abide by our Working Agreements. Students will be given a card that will ask them to speak to me when we have some open time. Please note that this will occur after at least two verbal warnings. Parents can receive text updates by signing up with Class Dojo should that be necessary due to continued classroom agreement violations. This can be put into place following a parent conference if necessary.
Severe discipline matters as covered by our Clara Barton Handbook will be handled through the Administrative office with a citation.
When can I expect a returned call, conference, or email?
I make every effort to return emails within one working day or less. I will return phone calls during the times outlined above. Parent conferences can generally be arranged within 5 working days depending upon School/District meetings.
Are parents welcomed to help with our classroom?
Absolutely - parents can help in so many ways! Please let me know if you prefer to work behind the scenes running worksheets, putting together centers or bulletin boards. Students also enjoy having someone to read to and share their thoughts with - let me know if that is your area of interest. We've had some of our best STEAM activities led by our parents! Please let me know if there is an area of expertise you would like to share with our class. We also have STEAM activities that can be made even better with parent participation. Of course, this is all dependent upon COVID restrictions that will be in place this school year.
